Your brand's presence on a Google results page stopped being just your website a while ago. Video carousels, short-form clips, forum threads and social profiles now take up a growing share of the SERP, and until this month you had no way to measure any of it from the inside. That changes with an announcement Google published on 7 July 2026: platform properties, a new Search Console property type that reports how your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube content performs on Google Search and Discover.
The framing from Google, via Search Console product lead Moshe Samet, is telling. People are gravitating toward "firsthand perspectives and different content formats", so Google wants site owners and creators, even those without their own website, to get a consolidated view of how all their content gets discovered on Search. Read that back: Google is formally acknowledging that a brand's search footprint spans platforms it does not own, and is handing over the instrumentation to prove it. This follows an earlier limited experiment, now graduating into a proper property type.
What you actually get
Once you connect a platform account, Search Console gives you three views for it:
- Performance report. The one that matters: total clicks, impressions and the familiar companion metrics, filterable and sortable so you can see exactly which posts and which search queries are driving traffic to your social content. The data is exportable if you would rather analyse it elsewhere.
- Insights report. A high-level overview of recent traffic trends, your top-performing posts, and how people discover your account on Google.
- Achievements. Milestone tracking, such as crossing a new total-clicks threshold from Google Search in the last 28 days. Cosmetic, but harmless.
The headline capability is the first one. For the first time, you can see the actual search terms that lead people to your TikTok videos or Instagram posts, from Google's own data rather than a third-party tool's estimate.
Why this is bigger than it looks
Social SEO has been a real discipline for at least three years, ever since it became clear that a well-optimised TikTok or YouTube result can outrank a website page for the same query. What it has never had is measurement. You could see in-platform analytics, and you could see your own site's Search Console, but the middle, Google search demand landing on your social content, was a black box. Now it is a report.
Your brand's search presence was always bigger than your website. Now the measurement finally is too.
That opens up questions most teams have been answering on instinct. Which queries does your YouTube channel win that your site does not? Where is a social post cannibalising a page you would rather rank? Where does your social content hold a SERP position your site could never reach, meaning the right move is to lean in rather than compete with yourself? These stop being debates and start being lookups.
How to set one up
In Search Console, open the property selector and click "Add property" (or go straight to the verification page), choose one of the four platforms, and follow the on-screen verification steps to authorise the connection to your account. Google says platform properties are rolling out gradually over the coming weeks, so do not be alarmed if the option has not reached you yet.
The honest caveats
Four platforms is not the whole social web: there is no LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest or Reddit at launch, and for plenty of B2B brands LinkedIn is the one that stings. The report also measures one thing only, how your posts perform on Google Search and Discover. It says nothing about in-platform reach, and it will not tell you whether a click to a TikTok profile ever becomes a customer. And it is one more silo of data: the consolidated view Google describes still needs someone to join platform properties, your site's Search Console and your analytics into a single picture of brand search visibility.
What to do this month
- Claim the properties as soon as they appear for you. Verification takes minutes, data accrues from connection, and the baseline is the asset. Even if you do nothing with it for a quarter, future-you gets a trend line.
- Cross-reference queries against your site. Pull the queries sending people to your social content and set them next to your website's query report. Overlaps are a cannibalisation decision; gaps are a brief for the channel that is winning.
- Decide deliberately which surface should win each query. Product and commercial-intent queries usually belong to your site. How-to, review and personality-led queries may genuinely be better served by your video or social presence. Choose, then optimise accordingly.
- Fold it into reporting now. If your monthly SEO report still equates "search visibility" with "website rankings", it is undercounting your brand. Add the platform view before a competitor's deck does it for you.
Where we come in
This update is a gift to exactly the kind of cross-channel picture our Full Digital Marketing Audit exists to build: your website, your social presence and your paid activity read as one system, with a single prioritised roadmap for where the next pound and hour should go. And if the new query data has you wondering which searches your brand should be winning in the first place, that is precisely what our Keyword Research Audit answers. Google just handed everyone the data. The advantage goes to the teams who read it properly.
